An amazing feat for a program designed to run on much larger computers. They spent considerable effort in paring down PRO/II to run in a 16-bit PC. They considered Hysim more of a threat than Aspen Tech. It was targeted for use in oil production.

Hysim was a Candian company that brought out a simulator named Hysim. The first version was scaled down and brought out on a 16-bit pc. They added the ability to write your own reaction kinetic equations. They improved the specification system, added the Calculator unit operation, added an activity coefficient database, and allowed the filling out of thermodynamic models with Unifac. After PRO/II was released, it took a considerable amount of work to make that system more efficient. That works because I did it myself in the work I was doing. What they should have done was to use C's ability to allocate memory dynamically and pass a pointer to that memory to Fortran and be done with it. Unix and RISC based computer architecture was becoming increasingly available. SimSci chose to write a pointer-based database and a virtual memory manager in Fortran. One of the objectives was to eliminate the 50 component limit in Process due to Fortran's lack of dynamic memory allocation. Taking the FE?
